Echo’s book club

image

Ok folks. Let’s get this awesome book club underway. Many people on Twitter, and IG, have been hitting me up for awhile, asking me to start a book club, or just asking me for book recommendations. I’m going to offer up these two choices (see above) and let folks who want to be down with the book club, decide which to start reading.

I’ll post a few questions in the next post, depending on which book we unanimously (or as close to that) choose, to kind of get us all started with a “dialogue”. People can then simply leave comments/questions in the comment section of the post. After that point, I’ll decide if we jump to a periodic Skype group chat, or a Gmail conversation between us all, etc.

“Manuscript Found in Accra is a novel by Paulo Coelho. The action is placed in 1099 in Jerusalem while the city awaits the invasion of the crusaders. Inside the city’s walls, men and women gathered to hear the wise words of a mysterious greek man– known as the Copt. The people begin with questions about their fears, true enemies, defeat and struggle.”

OR…

“The Bhagavad Gita (Sanskrit: श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता, Śrīmadbhagavadgītā) is a 700-verse scripture that is part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is a sacred text of the Hindus.
The Gita is set in a narrative framework of a dialogue between Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide Lord Krishna. Facing the duty to kill his relatives, Arjuna is “exhorted by his charioteer, Kṛiṣhṇa, among others, to stop hesitating and fulfill his Kṣatriya (warrior) duty as a warrior and kill.”

  1. Dear Echo, I’m interested in the book club and in just discussing life with you in general. Ordering both books today, hope to hear from you soon man.

    • Thank you for your participation. There’s instructions and links above in the comments that I’ve posted. Please review.

  2. So it seems that anyone who has decided to read along with me in the book club, is reading “Manuscript Found In Accra” however they want, at the speed they want so, instead of me trying to have the book read chapter by chapter by everyone, then have a “discussion” about each chapter, how about everybody just reads the whole book by next Monday, then we’ll have a closing discussion. I’ll post a few questions relevant to the book on Monday, and we’ll wrap it up like that. Sweet.

    • Dear Echo,

Sorry we could not follow directions in an orderly fashion. Guys/Gals, can we please do this properly with the next book please so our club is not just a book recommendation place? We don’t want to piss off our host and it would of been cooler to talk about it as I read it so c’mon I’m sure you all agree

      =)

  3. Here’s a quote from the book, so you know what we’re getting into:

“There is nothing wrong with anxiety.
Although we cannot control God’s time, it is part of the human condition to want to receive the thing we are waiting for as quickly as possible.
Or to drive away whatever is causing our fear….
Anxiety was born in the very same moment as mankind. And since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it-just as we have learned to live with storms.”

The story is set on July 14, 1099. Jerusalem awaits the invasion of the crusaders who have surrounded the city’s gates. There, inside the ancient city’s walls, men and women of every age and every faith have gathered to hear the wise words of a mysterious man known only as the Copt. He has summoned the townspeople to address their fears with truth.

So today is Thursday March 20. Let’s read the first chapter between today and Monday, and go over a few questions after that. This way some people that haven’t gotten the book, can still do so. We’ll read a chapter a week, and review each chapter with a few discussion questions. Let’s go!

  4. Ok, so looks like “Manuscript Found In Accra” is the majority choice. I’ll give people a chance to download/purchase/find the book and will post some questions to get us started tomorrow morning.

If you have the book already, feel free to start reading. Come back here tomorrow for the questions that will hopefully “lead you” into the book.

    ~ECHO

  5. I’ll give people a day or 2 to give me suggestions between the two choices above, and lock in a book choice by Wednesday. Then I’ll post further instructions on how to proceed.

  6. How about we start with Accra? I am blessed to have The Bhagvad Gita and I’ve read a few chapters… I am not ready to understand it yet. I am usually able to read a few pages and then I have to stop cuz it makes sense only after a few days of thinking. LOL

  7. I’d have to get my hands on a copy of Accra, I recently got the Gits though.

  8. Lets read both 🙂 I’ll start with the Coelho. How fast can you guy read??
